The first full song I wrote while learning to play the guitar back in 2005 - a tribute to my best canine friend, Banjo, who passed away while I was at college. Huge thanks to Kevin Cretsos for lending some actual banjo to this 2026 updated version.

Lyrics

Remember the time when you stumbled around
With a pumpkin bucket on your head?
Or the time that I reached out to pet you and frowned
‘Cause you chomped on my arm instead?
I know I deserved it, I was being too “ruff”
I just had so much affection to show
But I’ll miss when you smiled, you playful lil’ pup
My beautiful beagle, oh Banjo

Where have you gone, oh Banjo old pal?
Did you go up to heaven, just as all good dogs shall?
Are you chasing endless bright tennis balls around?
Or hiding the abundance of bones that you found?
I’ll miss you my boy, so I’ll sing you a song
And put your pictures up on my shelves
But I know that your life was as sweet as it was long
In dog years one hundred and twelve
One hundred and twelve

Remember the time when you jumped at your crate
And met with a face full of door
Or the way you happily pant there and wait
To go down the pool slide once more
Oh Banjo good buddy, you may have been old
But at heart and at mind you were young
I’ll think fondly of your fur, black white and gold
And I’ll laugh about your silly pink tongue

Where have you gone, oh Banjo old pal?
Did you go up to heaven, just as all good dogs shall?
Are you chasing endless bright tennis balls around?
Or hiding the abundance of bones that you found?
I’ll miss you my boy, so I’ll sing you a song
And put your pictures up on my shelves
But I know that your life was as sweet as it was long
In dog years one hundred and twelve

I know your name was funny
Uncommon at best
But I was three years old, sonny
So what’d you expect?
We’d play outside together for hours on end
There’s no companion better than my best canine friend
You were such a great beagle, it put Snoopy to shame
So majestic and regal, you earned blue ribbon fame
We treated you humanely and you paid us back with joy
To sum you up plainly…
Good boy

Where have you gone, oh Banjo old pal?
Did you go up to heaven, just as all good dogs shall?
Are you chasing endless bright tennis balls around?
Or hiding the abundance of bones that you found?
I’ll miss you my boy, so I’ll sing you a song
And put your pictures up on my shelves
But I know that your life was as sweet as it was long
In dog years one hundred and twelve
